Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!!!!

With the snow/ice storm looming here in Nashville, I thought this would be the perfect time to share photos of my paternal grandparents enjoying a rare snowstorm in Memphis, TN, circa late 1940's.

These were taken at my paternal Great Grandfather, Charles Daniel Parham's home somewhere near Robinhood Lane and Park Avenue in Memphis, TN. These geographical clues were provided by my  father, and I must thank him for patiently answering my fifty questions today.

Zooming closer in on the home, I could see the house number was 3729. I searched all homes with that house number on the Shelby County Assessor's website and found only two that were constructed prior to 1950, both of which are near Robinhood Lane and Park Avenue.

Postcards From Bootcamp 1942

Robert Olin Ferrer is my paternal grandfather, and an Army veteran who served as a First Sargeant during WWII. His bootcamp training was held at Camp Polk, Louisiana.

I have a small collection of postcards that he sent to his mom (Agnes Eileen (Grace) Ferrer, and one that he sent to his Grandmother (Florence Gertrude (McKee) Grace while in training.

Thank you Wikipedia for this information.

Paris Inn Los Angeles, California

Pictured here is my paternal grandfather, Robert "Olin" Ferrer, taken at the Paris Inn in Los Angeles, California. Olin enlisted in WWII on March 11, 1942. In this photo he has his First Sargeant Patch, therefore, I can safely assume this was taken post war.

Olin was stationed in the Philippines and my father remembers that he shipped out from a port in San Francisco. Research shows that soldiers fighting in the Philippines campaign were shipped to the islands through the Port of Embarkation in San Francisco, CA or the Oakland Army Terminal in Oakland, CA. My father and I are guessing this is why Olin was in Los Angeles.

Henry Tibbe Corncob Pipe Factory

Washington, Missouri

Henry Tibbe, a Hollander, produced the first lathe-turned corncob pipe in 1872 in a shop (no longer standing) at 209 West Second Street,  in which he made spinning wheels. In 1878,he moved into a building (no longer standing) at Front and Jefferson streets. In 1883 he moved to the Front and Cedar street building. His son, Anton A. Tibbe, continued the business after his father's death in 1896. In 1907, it became the Missouri Meerschaum Company.

Legend has it that a local farmer whittled a pipe out of a corncob and liked it so much that he asked Henry Tibbe to try turning some on his lathe.

Meerschaum is a turkish clay used in high grade pipes. In German, the word means "sea foam". Tibbe liked his light, porous corncob pipes and their cool smoke to that of the more expensive meerschaum pipes and thus called his pipes, "Missouri Meerschaums". Tibbe and a chemist friend devised a system of applying plaster to the outside of the corncob then sanding the bowl smooth after it dried. In 1878, Tibbe patented the process.

In 1918, my maternal great-grandfather, John Florian Filla, was employed by the Missouri Meerschaum Company. I learned this from his WWI registration card.

Today's Soundtrack: The Arkansas Traveler

While researching the corn cobb pipe factory in Washington, Missouri, I found an image that looked extremely similar to a Ferrer photo I had seen before. I brought this to the attention of my cousin, Kristin (Klinck) Petersen, of Dixie Roots blog, and she did all of the necessary research. I did my thing......music!

Here is the photo that I found:

Here is the photo that Kristin had:

Emma (Johnson) Ferrer and mystery man.

Therefore, we must research to the tune of "The Arkansas Traveler"!
