Harty Family History

All of the information shared below was given to me by my Third Cousin, twice removed, Mr. Paul Hampton Harty, Jr. This man is a treasure and I hope to meet him very soon! Thank you, Paul for all of the time you have invested in digging up our family roots.

The Harty Family

Hans Jocobsen Hartje:
Hans Jacobsen Hartje, a weaver, was born in Berne, Switzerland around 1645 probably while his parents were traveling from Holland to America. The last name was also known as Harte, Hertjie, Herte, Harding, and Sardingh. The name Hartje was pronounce Har-ti-a and Hertche by some. He was known as Hans Jacobsen Sardingh on the ships manifest of De Bonte Koe or "The Spotted Cow". Sardingh is pronounced as Harding, thus the name used by some to identify him. His name translated into English is John Jacob Harty, but in Dutch, the middle name Jacobsen indicates that he is probably the son of Jacob (because the the "sen" added to Jacob), and Jacob's wife was probably Frena (all based on the Dutch naming system), since Frena was the name given to his second natural born daughter.

Hans Jacobsen Hartje married Geertje Lambertse Moll (the "se" on the end of Lambertse indicates that she was the daughter of Lambert Mol/Moll). Hans and Geertje were married on 29 July 1668 in Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Netherlands. Hans and Geertje raised ten children. The first child was either adopted or born out of wedlock but she was raised as a Hartje.
Children:
1.     Barbara Hanse Hartje B. 31 Jan 1666  New York, Kings, New York (England conquered the Dutch and changed the name from Nieuw Amsterdam to New York and the county to Kings, New York). D. 8 July 1749. M. Jacob Jacobsen Kool/Cool.
2.     Tryntie Hanse Hartje C. Catherine for maternal grandmother Tryntie Pieterse Kowenhoven March 1670. M. Peter Paulusse.
3.     Frena Hanse Hartje C. Frena for her paternal grandmother Frena C. 26 Aug 1671 M. Jurre Jansen Mares.
4.     Koenradt/Conrad Hansen Hartje (Our Direct Ancestor) C. 26 Nov 1673 M. Leuntie Miggilse Kool/Cool daughter of Miggil/Michael Kool and Elizabeth Vreeland, on 31 Dec 1698. D. Dec 1712.
5.      Lambert Hansen Hartje C. 26 Apr 1676 named for Lambert Huybertson Moll, his maternal grandmother.
6.     Reyer/Roger Hanse Hartje C. 27 Feb 1678 D. Early
7.     Johannes/John Hansen Hartje B. 10 July 1679 M. Else Wietse Banta.
8.     Jacob Hanse Hartje B. 26 Nov 1671 M. Tryntje Stratemaker
9.     Lambert Hansen Hartje B. 21 Nov 1673
10.   Ameline/Emeline Hanse Hartje B. 4 Nov 1685 M. Johannes Veveelen.

**** As you will note above, the Dutch had a naming system that made it possible to identify the lineage of families. The first female baby was named after the mother's mother and the first male baby after the father's father. The second daughter was named after the father's mother and the second son was named after mother's father.****
Our direct descendant, Conrad, did not fit this naming system. His name should have been Jacob Hansen Hartje. Some researchers seem to think that he was named after his father's brother, Conradt, while other think that his father, Hans Jacobsen Hartje should have been called Hans Conradse hartje and that the Jacobsen name came to be associated with his name, as he and his grandson Hans Jacobsen Hartje were confused by early researchers. The grandson "Hans Jacobsen Hartje" was the son of Conrad. His name should have been Hans Conradsen Hartje but he was known as Hans Jacobsen Harty. Some say that he was called Hans Jacobsen Hartje after his grandfather, breaking the Dutch tradition, and this caused confusion between him and his grandfather in historical accounts.*****A special thank you for additional information received from "Hartje to Harty" Please visit this site:

  1. There is more to the story than shows. I descend from Robert Steward/t of Stoddard County, MO. He was born in 1786 in VA. I find him next in White County, TN. While there he purchased adjoin land with Dennis Harty and Daniel Harty. All 3 purchased on the same day and sold on the same day. I have the bounty land files from the War of 1812. Robert Steward and Daniel Harty enlisted on the same day in the same unit in White County, TN. When you read the bounty land file things become very interesting. Robert Steward said he is the half brother of Daniel Harty. Daniel Harty also said Robert Steward is his half brother. Dennis Harty & Robert Steward are both born in 1786. If Rhoda Fleming is the mother of Daniel Harty born in 1790 then she must be the mother of Robert Steward born in VA in 1786. Does Dennis Harty have a different mother? Robert Steward also died in Stoddard County, MO. Other surnames very common in Stoddard County, MO are Goforth and Caldwell.

    1. Hi, this is Brent L. Harty, #2 son of Paul H. Harty, Jr. I'd love to see a copy of bounty land files from War of 1812. Not sure about the half-brother information, but I'll look through Dad's records and see if he has anything else there. Dad passed away on 13 May 2021. I don't recall him mentioning this, but that is going a ways back and a half-brother doesn't really impact our direct line. He tried to get after all the cousins, but that is a huge effort that is always needing updates. At any rate, please contact me via email at brent.l.harty@gmail.com and let's see what we can figure out!

    3. Another question for you...do you have the unit information, day and location of muster in TN? Dennis, Daniel and Jacob Harty (brothers and apparently half-brothers to Robert Steward) also all fought in the War of 1812. I believe they were ultimately under Brigadier General William Carroll (the other TN brigadier general was Coffee) that fought under Major General Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans (as well as other engagements prior).

I would certainly love to hear more the half-brother branch, as well as the unit muster information. Thanks! Brent

    2. Hi, this is Brent L. Harty, #2 son of Paul H. Harty, Jr. Dad passed away on 13 May 2021. He was in a great deal of pain, as so often is the case as we age, so it was a great blessing for him to pass away recently. Nonetheless, on this discussion particularly he would certainly have some helpful insights to share.

Please feel free to contact me via email at brent.l.harty@gmail.com and I'll see what documents he may have collected that will prove your lineage for the DAR membership requirements.
Dennis Harty was from NJ and fought in the Morris County Militia. He noted that they lived in the Elizabeth Town area. I don't have exact militia unit information yet, but Dad had this information listed for him. Jacob Harty is also in my line, but my 7th great-grandfather Daniel, one of John's older brothers Dennis, Jacob and Daniel were all veterans of the War of 1812 from Tennessee, it would appear from White County. I don't have their exact unit information confirmed yet either, although I found some muster roll record saying Daniel enlisted as a private in "2nd Reg. Pillows, W. Tenn. Vols".

What firm information do you require to establish proof of lineage? I might have somewhere a census record. Pretty much all these Harty's settled in South East MO, starting in Cape Girardeau County and then in the western parts of the County that eventually formed in Stoddard and Bollinger County. I was the last Harty of my specific line born in Cape Girardeau County, although all of the rest of my brothers were also born in Missouri. My Dad in interred in Bloomfield Cemetery in Stoddard County next to his parents and many other Hartys.

My email is brent.l.harty@gmail.com. Also you can text me at (910) 916-2210, but I won't answer an unknown number, so just leave me a text and we can go from there. I look forward to being of any assistance in your family records search, cousin!

  4. I am a descendant of Alfred Lafayette Harty. His grandson, Harry Lafayette Harty Jr, was my maternal grandfather. I am John Harty Ewing.

I was just curious if there’s a new link about the change from Hartje to Harty. The old Angelfire link is down now. It’s hard finding info on Hartje in Holland. It doesn’t seem to be very common unless it’s regional. I thought I remember reading somewhere that it’s Frisian but there is no confirmation on that.

    1. Hartje change happened in New Amsterdam. This is Brent L. Harty, #2 son of Paul H. Harty, Jr. He also stated that one of my uncles did some early research on the name. Look for Sardingh which was pronounced similarly to Hartje. There are several similar spelling derivatives. Here is an account that he has on Hans Jacobzen Hartje on familysearch.com

Hans Jacobsen Hartje/Harty/Herte/Heerte/Hertie/Hartie/Harding/Sardingh was born in Bern, Switzerland, and he moved to Amsterdam and eventually migrated to Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Netherlands on board the Bonte Koe or Spotted Cow, under the direction of Captain Bergen. He was listed on the Ship Passenger list as Hans Jacobsen Sardingh which sounds like Hartie when pronounced correctly. He bought a small farm known as Stuyvesants Bowery on 12 February 1669. His marriage Banns were posted on 29 July 1668 and indicated that he was a young man from Switzerland. He was listed as a weaver or maker of cloth. Hans and Geertje/Geertie were the parents of ten children: 1) Tryntje/Catherine; 2) Frene/Fern; 3) Koenradt/Conrad; 5) Lambert; 6) Reyer/Roger; 7) Johannas/John; 8) Jacob; 9) Lambert; 10) Ameliyn/Emeline. They may have been the parents of Barbara who some say was born out of wedlock, but certainly adopted into the Hartje home. They had two sons by the name of Lambert and both died young. Any other children are not of their family! The Bonte Koe which translates into English as the Spotted Cow which left Amsterdam on 16 April 1633 and arrived in Nieuw Amsterdam, Nieuw Netherlands between 4 May 1633 and 17 August 1633. Hans bought a farm on 12 Feb 1669 which was referred to as Stuyvessant's Bowery. Most of his family was born and raised here. He was a weaver or maker of cloth and also a farmer. His wedding banns were published on 29 Jul 1668. He was referred to on the Banns as j.m. van baren Switzerlnt or when translated, young man from Berne Switzerland, He and his wife Geertje were credited with raising ten children. The first child was either adopted or born out of wedlock as their wedding day was 29 Jul 1668 and Barbara Hanse Hartje was born on 31 Jan 1666. (Some sources state that Geertje was pregnant when Hans married her, but no current information clarifies if the child belonged to Hans and Geertje or someone else. Regardless she was raised as a Harty/Hartje and considered herself as a Harty. Child 2) Tryntie/Catherine Hanse Hartje was christened on 10 Mar 1670, 3) Frene/Ferne Hanse Hartje christened on 26 Aug 1671 4) Koenraedt/Conrad Hansen Harje was christened on 26 Nov 1673, 5) Lambert Hansen Harje christened on 26 Apr 1676 6) Johannes/John Hansen Hartje was born on 10 Jul 1679, 7) Reyer/Roger Hartje christened on 27 Feb 1678, 8) Jacob Hansen Hartje christened on 26 Nov 1681, 9) Lambert Hansen Hartje christened on 21 Nov 1683, and 10) Amelijn/Emaline Hanse Harje was christened on 4 Nov 1685. 5. Lucendia Caroline Harty married into my maternal grandfather's line (Morgan). She was my great-great grandmother. I followed her father's name to Jacob Conrad Jacobsen Hartje and Frena, but can't seem to find anything else...yet. My name is Heather Huddle (castielfan78@gmail.com).

My Dad, Paul Harty, Jr put up most of this information, but passed away on 13 May 2021. I have pretty much all of his work, but am not as near familiar with it. I'm trying to become more familiar with it. At any rate, I'll do what I can to help. Thanks!

  7. Madeleine,

Please accept my apologies for somehow putting my name on the top of your blog! A screen took me to some 'european union' screen and said that I need to list my name I as I wished it to appear. I thought it was for my name as one of the comment authors. Instead, it put my name as the blog owner. Can you please rectify this somehow? Thanks and sorry about this issue. I sure appreciate all of the discussion your blogpost has made in relation to our common family heritage!
